Coal Storage Unit

Coal storage

Less dust - cleaner air: the new coal storage unit

In preparation for to the modernization of the Staudinger power plant, the site will be given a new, closed coal storage unit. This will create space, where the current coal storage yard is located, for the new power plant block.

Up to now the coal for the Staudinger power plant has been stored on an open coal heap and moved to the storage yard by means of wheeled loaders. The fact that the storage unit will be closed and fully automated, will considerably reduce not only dust emissions but also the noise from the storage yard in future. As the permission procedure has not yet been finished for the new construction project, E.ON Kraftwerke has decided to build a coal storage unit first.

Data

The construction work on the first circular storage has been started in April 2008. In the year before the flooding area for the Main River, the so-called retention area, has been created. We have also started to clean up the ground water. This is necessary because the site was formerly used by NATO as an oil port and the soil is badly contaminated. A costly process is required to decontaminate the soil, and the cleaning process will take several years.
